Functions with lists: explain, fix and justify

Mark Delaney (fictional) · due Nov 27

Does the instructor allow AI on this assignment?

The instructor sets this. Here you can see both cases.

Step 2 of 5: Helper

What to do

Read the code snippet, shown as text. Explain what each part does, find the code's error, write the corrected version and justify it with the instructor's material. You can use the AI and the helper; show what you changed in your work and why.

Code snippet

# Adds up the first four values in the list
def sum_first(values):
    total = 0
    for i in range(1, 5):
        total = total + values[i]
    return total

The code is shown as text. Eidovia does not run it; the instructor is the one who assesses it.

AI rules

AIYou can ask the AI for help up to 15 times. Your instructor sees how you used it.

  • Use AI to understand and critique. The explanation and the fix are yours.
  • Every request goes on your work's timeline. Your instructor grades your process, not just the final result.
  • Read what the AI sends and adapt it to what the assignment asks. What you change stays in the versions and on the timeline.

Course assignment: instructors and teaching assistants can read this project while you work, including the requests to the AI and the instructions, the AI’s answers (unused ones too), the map’s whole history and, when you submit, the reflection answers.

How the instructor will assess

  1. Explanation of the code. Says what each part of the code does, in her own words.
  2. Fixing the error and justifying it. Finds the error, shows the corrected version and explains why it is right, backed by the material.
  3. Use of sources. Gathers and uses sources relevant to the assignment.
  4. How she used the AI's answers. Reviews what the AI proposes: adjusts, discards or accepts it with judgment.
  5. Stages of the work. Builds the work in stages, revising versions.
  6. Reflection. Answers the reflection questions in depth.
